"Books on the Chopping Block" Performance by CityLit Theater (Grades 6-12 and Adults)

Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read and the importance of the First Amendment. Held during the last week of September, Banned Books Week highlights the benefits of free and open access to information while drawing attention to the harms of censorship by spotlighting actual or attempted bannings of books across the United States.

Books on the Chopping Block is City Lit theater’s annual performance of live dramatic readings by professional actors of short excerpts taken from the top 10 most frequently challenged books in the US.

The 60-minute performance is adapted from excerpts from the top 10 most frequently challenged books of 2023, presented in a countdown from 10-1 with an audience discussion/Q&A to follow.
